The Abandoned Greenhouse

In a dying city absent of life, a lone greenhouse in the center of a ruined city quietly thrives. A lone survivor grows the meager crops that grows in the tilled soil, hoping it will last them for even just one more day.

Original Concept - Max Mena

"The Abandoned Greenhouse" is based the concept art, "Harvest: Greenhouse Showdown" created by Max Mena on ArtStation. This scene was created in my Environment for Games course, and marked my first time trying to put together a scene with a games pipeline in mind. It was also my first time using Substance Designer and Speedtree, which presented difficult but fun challenges to learn throughout the term.

I was responsible for all aspects in the scene except for small Megascans plants, Megascans decals, as well as the farground buildings (taken from CGTrader).

I started with modeling the scene in Maya to get a better sense of the camera angle and scale. The foliage in the scene were made by first sculpting leaves in ZBrush, which were then baked down onto planes in Substance Painter and exported as textures. Those texture maps were then imported into Speedtree to procedurally model foliage assets. Speedtree's "Randomize" button made it easy to make quick iterations of completed assets for more variety.

Materials

A majority of my textures were made in Substance Designer, which I then created into master materials to make custom parameters for. Because of the grungy and overgrown nature of the scene, I used vertex blending and custom masks to sell the natural variation in the environment. Setting all the textures to be world-aligned ensured that the transitions between kitbashed meshes would be seamless.
